saturday, march 30
so it's time for an "I love San Francisco so much" passage... If you had joined me on my walk to work this morning you would be writing it too...
5:20 am alarm goes off, and I feel as though I am in some nice dark hotel room. Mat rearranged our bedroom furniture last night to avoid porcelain death caused by toilets falling through the ceiling onto our heads (for those who do not read honan.net, the toilet seems to be leaking in our upstairs neighbors' bathroom and our bedroom ceiling is scary and saggy). No longer sleeping with our heads below the windows, the room is dark in the mornings. BUT, at this time of year I LOVE The mornings because the birds are already singing when I wake up at the crack before dawn!! or at least they are about to start up their chorus. They are actually just clearing their throats and gargling with warm salt water...
As I get ready the sun starts to light up the sky, and I set off for work at about 6:30. The light is beautiful, and the empty streets make me want to dance and run through them singing with the birds. The temperature is perfect. I walk down Fulton street, and I see these people that look about my age, five of them, dressed in their clothes from last night sitting quietly huddled together on their front porch steps watching the morning. They are all smiling, and we exchange knowing looks and smiles as we say "good morning...". Nice hippyish looking kids full of love and contentment on the front steps, totally in the same "I love this morning!!" space that I'm in. Only I just had decaf coffee. The morning is that good.
I walk past Alamo Square and mist is clearing from the trees as people walk their dogs. Only three dogs out at this early hour on a saturday. butt-sniffing of course...
I see an older Asian couple walking their tiny teacup dog with a little orange clip in its hair on top of its head. An elderly man that I assume is one of their fathers tromps behind them as they take their morning constitutional. They are swinging their arms, moving their chi...
I LOVE this city. I look at the old Victorians and try to decide which one I would live in if I could live in any of them. someday maybe I think... I sit now in my PICU with no windows and no fresh air, and I can hear that beautiful bird chorus that serenaded me from the second that I woke up until I walked in the door here. I can almost smell the blooming flowers as San Francisco welcomes spring... It seems to be shaping up to be an incredible day today. Everyone enjoy!! but I think that I got the best part...
