THE LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!!!! The greatest movie that I have ever seen... seriously. I loved the Star Wars movies when they came out, but I mostly loved them because my older brother loved them (I was quite young at the time). I played with the action figures with my brother and our neighborhood friends every day.
The Lord of the Rings, though. Wow! We saw it Christmas Day, and it was truly meditative... for the however long time that the movie lasted (it felt like one hour), I was in that world. I was so completely involved and 100% present as I never am when watching a movie. I found myself concentrating on my breathing, wanting to take in every scene, every sensation brought up by what I was watching.
It was a movie that was experienced, not just watched.
My heart would race as some of the characters were so horrible, so terrifying. I would clinch my arm rest and when the hobbits and the other members of the fellowship would escape from the monsters, I would sigh with relief as the movies then placed you in an extremely soothing space for a rest. The movie makes such sharp contrasts in its scenes of terror and the safe places that the fellowship takes refuge in.
I could go on and on about this movie. The message was great, too. The movie made me want to be a better person. I wanted to be 100% on the "good" side. It has made me try to be less selfish. The dark side reminded me, scarily enough, of our greedy, destructive society. The biggest crime of the dark side was its greed and lust for power. Sorry to say, but it kinda reminded me of our current administration and the oil companies and the paper companies that cut old growth, etc. Incredible parallels, I think. It was interesting that the ONLY creature capable of touching the ring without being corrupted by it was the most simple, the Hobbit. Even Gandolf, the very good wizard, knew that he couldn't touch the ring.
The hobbit, who lived simply in nature, represented goodness.
