Thirsting for Red Bull, finding only Blue Ox thursday, may 31An interesting article on one of my favorite bands, Calexico, who will be in town on June 3.-- posted 17:03 Looking at Plastic this afternoon, I see that it picked up two stories I posted today. One on Rockstar's new game (see below) and another, which I sent in, on Fred Durst. Groovy.-- posted 16:42 The bully is back in American politics. Intimidation, dismissal of majority opinion, denial of scientific facts and aggressive scapegoating -- these tactics have once again taken center stage. Blatant propaganda feeds fear and distrust, and the powerful and the privileged wallow in the spoils. AlterNet -- The 13 Scariest White Guys in America. I came across this on Plastic. Normally, I wouldn't list something I found there (although I will post things here first then submit them there, like the Durst post below) but this is a great read.-- posted 11:23 Shit, he's breeding. "we humped early along in the anger mangement tour and now she is pregnant." Despite the incredibly stupid an inappropriate use of flash, I'm pretty psyched to see RockStar's new game, State of Emergency, in which you battle cops in the streets of Seattle. Although I think they missed the point (the Seattle protests weren't about fighting cops or looting Starbucks), I'm glad to see the protestor-as-hero game genre. I also think it means that the kids's sympathies today probably lie more with the infamous "black clad anarchists" than the WTO-- posted 09:28 Baby Wombat: This is the best lead to a story I've ever read in my entire life: It went up to 101 degrees F yesterday, the hottest day on record for the month of May in san Francisco. We've got blackout warnings and a sweltering apartment, but I love the hot days and nights in the city. Since nobody has air-conditioning, people leave their windows open at night. LAst night, you could hear neighbors all around us talking, laughing, playing music, and doing all those things humans do in cities. When I went outside to have a cigarette (I'm smoking again) I saw neighbors all around hanging out on htier proches, fanning themselves, drinking beer, and relaxing. The heat makes it feel like a community. A somewhat smelly, sweaty community, maybe... But still, a community rather than a big city.-- posted 07:58 wednesday, may 30To say that I'm not Dubya's biggest fan is sort of like saying that Bill Clinton isn't spending his retirement penning mash notes to Ken Starr. It's not that I dislike Bush as a person, it's just that I think he's evil, stupid, and dangerous. But I've got to admit, his boozy daughters are starting to make even me feel bad for the guy. -- posted 16:42 I've forgotten to link to two articles I wrote for Macworld this week. The first is on ATI's new rendering technology called TRUFORM, the second is on price increases in the CD-R market.-- posted 16:11 I hope this is a typo: Speedway SuperAmerica supports changing government regulations designed to prevent sales of tobacco products to minors. If you've been by the site more than once today, well, bless you. No, really, if you've loaded the page a few times today chances are you've seen one of several different designs. Being an idiot, I published a new design without saving the old one. The new one didn't work well, and I've been toying with what are essentially placeholders since then.-- posted 14:33 the Gorgeous Guy makes the news. Brought to you by David Cassel--the world's most intense reporter.-- posted 10:26 From Dave: tuesday, may 29Welcome back, d. boon background image. Coming soon: a better layout.-- posted 18:42 Resident Select (as Ted Rall calls him) Dubya is in California this week, not because he wants to be, I'm sure. He's come to save us from ourselves. To reverse the mistakes we've made by not building enough power plants. To drum up business for his Oil-lovin' buddies and the politics of plantary destruction. Once again, he gives California the finger. Drill more, he shamelessly says, as if he and his vice-resident didn't stand to make personal gains and enrich their friends and families by doing so. No shame, where there should be a mountian of it. Fuck the Future, I'm in charge: that seems to be the new White House motto. -- posted 15:59 Is this more fallout from the gorgeous guy at 4th and Market?-- posted 12:15 I'm adding some Amazon associate stuff to the site. Please help me get free books. I'm a capitalist whore.-- posted 09:44 monday, may 28I ran our greenhouse gas emissions through a couple of personal Climate Change Calculators. Although, as I expected, we did very well on the first one, the second, which took air travel into account, noted that we would still have to plant 54.6 trees (29 of these alone come from our air travel) a year to make up for the 18.2 tons of carbon we spew into the air every year. Both my wife and I use bikes as our primary modes of transit, with busses being our secondary source. I can't imagine the impact we would have if either or both of us were daily car commuters.-- posted 20:06 Damn, I wish I could buy one of these at the Apple Store.-- posted 19:23 "He's not the CEO of Halliburton anymore. I know that's difficult for him to accept. The vice president is clearly a smart man -- certainly brighter than George W. Bush. But some of the idiotic things he's said make me think he's got a lack of blood to the brain. If I were a White House operative, I would stuff a sock in his mouth as quickly as I could." -- Human quote machine Garry South.-- posted 13:03 So... what's meant, then, by Do Not List M Site?-- posted 12:44 We were going backpacking this weekend, but didn't, for a few reasons, none of which are interesting. Anyway, we went to the Central Coast this weekend instead, and stayed at the Madonna Inn in SLO. The Madonna is positively surreeal. Genuinely tacky, it's got 109 rooms, all of them different, all designed by Mrs. Madonna. We stayed in the Chestnut Foal. The picture doesn't dop the glitter on the ceiling justice. friday, may 25Metafilter is back, but in a sad state. -- posted 11:10 thursday, may 24
I've got no idea who did this. Scary, eh?-- posted 16:43 Karate Chimp-- posted 16:28 "When are you going to open the damn gate, you stupid Black idiot?" I normally try to avoid commenting on Apple-related news. I don't want to do anything that could be construed as a conflict of interest with my employer. And there are already plenty of Apple-watchers out there without me throwing my heat into the ring. This is particularly true of rumors and speculation. But since' Kevin Fox's iPad essay begins with the disclaimer: "The following is a work of speculation. It does not consist of any leaked information, nor does it purport to be a rumor." I feel safe in linking to it. It should also appear on kuro5hin.-- posted 12:27
We're going camping this weekend. I'm not too sure how good of an idea that is, considering how crowded it will be Memorial Day weekend. But still I was pleased to see this in the Chronicle: Banner season shaping up for camping. Conditions among best in 25 years. -- posted 09:35 You've heard this before, but, hotel blankets are icky. Thirty-eight of the stains were semen. Sleep tight.-- posted 09:30 wednesday, may 23Oh thank goodness, the Gorgeous Guy at 4th and Market lives!-- posted 14:03 What a great music site.-- posted 13:42 Elevator world magazine has a column called the Daily UPdate. How depressing.-- posted 09:38 Secadora's album release party is going to be on Wednesday, May 30th at the Bottom of the Hill. For more information, click here.-- posted 09:02 Riding to work today, I passed through a series of cones blocking the right lane on Market Street just before the Kearny/3rd intersection. When I got to the end of the construction zone, a flagman was standing there. He looked at me and the two other cyclists riding with me and said, "you really need a bike lane here. This is dangerous." Right on. -- posted 08:59 tuesday, may 22It's very pleasing to me that the Bush administration can't even make the White House web site stay online. Watch it realtime at Declan's whitehouse.gov monitor. Tired of the Bush administration? Well, it's getting close to being 10% over (146 days, I think). And for realtime updates on that, check out Dave's Bush Watch Clock.-- posted 16:38 I commented out all of the Blog Voices stuff on my site. For some reason they are really slow today, and it's causing the whole pageload to bog down. Hope to put it back in later.-- posted 16:31 Gosh. It looks like I'm not going to be able to eat at any of my favorite fast-food places anymore. First Denny's and now this: Blacks Sue Waffle House for Alleged Racism. Is it something in the hash-browns? I hope not, those things rock. And this from the company that released one of my all-time favorite corporate jingles. Not to mention great hash-browns. Scattered, smothered, and covered, baby. What a shame. Did I mention the great hash-browns? thanks for the tip, dave-- posted 16:24 The BBC, which I think is by far the world's best news service, is pulling the plug on shortwave broadcasts in the U.S.A., Canada, and much of the Pacific. But it isn't going away, the BBC is going to broadcast online. This is a fascinating story that also delves into shortwave.-- posted 15:52 Despite what you've read in Doonesbury, the Myth of the Martyred Mapmaker is slightly different from reality. Which is unfortunate.-- posted 13:58 Gosh, there hasn't been a Missed Connections post on the Gorgeous Guy at 4th and Market since May 19th. Has the meme died already? For something so virulent, it sure ran its course quickly. -- posted 11:40 The Stern Grove festival is one of the cooler events in San Francisco. I was just looking at this year's lineup, when I saw that Bill Laswell will be there on the 12th of August.-- posted 11:00 monday, may 21I've been contacted twice by reporters about this now. I'm going to answer their questions, but I wanted to post a copy of the email here first. In any case, it looks like Yahoo has some filters set up on their yahoo groups mailing lists. This is a message I sent out the other day to a group I'm on. I think it's fairly self-explanatory: I spent all morning today at WWDC, where I filed stories for both Macworld and Maccentral. Although it stresses me out to have to file on the fly like that, doing it occasionally is pretty invigorating. I can't, however, imagine working for a wire service. I'd have a breakdown.-- posted 15:48 Hip Hop Nation opened this week at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Go go go. -- posted 15:43 friday, may 18I did something I really wish I had not. A friend emailed me about the Tonight Show post (see below) and said "But the best part is what's posted on the discussion board." Fair enough, I went to go see, and saw a comment posted by.... my Mother. Mortified, I yanked it. Which was a completely asinine thing to do. I’m 28 years old, way past the age where I should be embarrassed by my Mom. Hell, I'm, proud that my mother supports my lunatic ramblings and hasn't disowned me for, well, lots of stuff. So, it's nearly a week late, but Happy Mother's Day mom. And I'd like to invite anyone who drops by to give my Mom a big shout out.-- posted 16:56 Palm downloads of the week: AIGO, a really nice and simple Go program written by A.Iizuka. $8.00. And Air Traffic Controller by Keyoe, way overpriced at $17.95, but the Demo's fun and, heck, some of you may be moneybags.-- posted 15:12 State investigators have found evidence that ``a cartel'' of power companies closed plants for unnecessary maintenance in order to inflate prices, the head of California's Public Utilities Commission (news - web sites) said in an interview published Friday in the Los Angeles Times. -- posted 11:00 I know that dialectizers are the oldest of old news, but this one is actually really good. Pornolize.com gives your, or any, Web site a virtual case of tourette's syndrome. Be warned, it's nasty. Thanks, Mark.-- posted 10:32 Raymond Pettibon blows my mind. He's also the subject of an interview in this week's LA Weekly. Good stuff.-- posted 09:57 Sure, Willie Brown biked to work yesterday. and that's nice. And it's a great photo op. I'm sure he enjoyed the block or two he rode. But there's a much better image of him on a bike.-- posted 09:20 thursday, may 17Wow.
Dave sent this to me. Oh my is it funny. I'm just going to present it as is (I'm not sure if he wrote this or forwarded it to me from somewhere else): This obscenity-laced parody of AOL's TV commercials -- where they interview ordinary dweebs about their experience -- is friggin' brilliant! With 26 million users accepting AOL's ongoing technical problems and service shortcomings, critics suggested AOL's slogan should be "YOU'RE so easy to use, it's no wonder we're number one." But AOL won't find the users in these ads quite so easy...-- posted 15:29 There's an interesting story in The San Francisco Examiner on water shortages and their implications for the future. A few years ago, I wrote up similar piece that discussed the global implications of the coming drought. And, of course, privatizing water was last years biggest Project Censored story. Drink up, Johnny.-- posted 11:54 Mike Dougherty, the guy who brought you Gaydar, PortaMonkey, PortaBush, and the Vindigo interface has a hillarious new quicktime movie out called Refrigerator Art. And I thought my family was a mess...-- posted 10:01 Site news: My friend David Kerns has generously offered to tweak the site's design for me from his underground fortress in Copenhagen. Or his apartment, whichever. I think I've fixed the Javascript error that was plagueing PC users who came here, but if you're still getting one, please let me know. Speaking of PCs, I just got a new Dell laptop with 750MHz PIII, 256MB RAM, 10GB, FireWire, CD-RW and other goodies. It's fast. No, faster than that. Thus I'll finally be able to look at the site cross-platform. But yes, the site is still "made with a Mac." Finally, I can't even count all of my friends who have been laid off in recent months. As a sort of public service, I'm thinking of adding their (and anyone else's who wants to be listed) email addys and a one or two word job description to the top of the right-side nav-bar. Interested? Let me know. I probably won't do anything unless there is sufficient interest.-- posted 09:28 wednesday, may 16Seems like everyone I know is getting laid off these days. Not just tech-workers, either. They were the first to go, but the ripples have spread. I literally can't even count the number of friends it's happened to. In some cases, the employer acts in good will towards those it lets go. But that's not always the case. Layoffs And The Law / What Your Ex-Employer Owes You from today's Chronicle is, unfortunately, a must-read in today's SF economy.-- posted 16:45 This photo which allegedly shows the new iMac has been floating around for ages. Don't be fooled.-- posted 14:42 Tim sent me a great link to the unfortunately named Assman Implements yesterday. But a quick Hoovers search shows that there are a variety of businesses that are proud to bear the Assman name. All of them, oddly enough, in the Midwest. Have Midwesterners cornered the Assman market? There's Assman Land and Cattle, who boast of genetics passed down. Assman Farm Supply promises that if they don't have it, you don't need it. Er... I'm not quite sure how to take that. And of course, there's always Letterman's whipping boy of mid-90s fame, Dick Assman. If this sort of thing amuses you as much as it does me, there are entire web sites dedicated to poorly thought out names.-- posted 14:31 My article on City Car Share is in the Bay Guardian this week. There's no art on the inside page (in the online edition), but I was really happy with the way the image they used on the site's front door came out. I think it is one of the better pictures I've taken.-- posted 12:58 This has been all over the news, so I don't know why I feel the need to link to it. But in any case, there's a memo suggesting a Texas firm manipulated the gas market. Like that's a surprise. And wait... wait.. two oil executines run the country now? Dirty tricks got them into office despite the will of the people? I used to be a patriot, now I fear my country. Bush & Cheney Inc. have smashed my faith in the democratic process, convinced me that the nation is run by big business, and eroded any faith I used to have in America. These El Paso punks will get away with this, as will all the others who have gauged California, because Bush & Cheney, Inc. need them to price gauge in order to conveince the public that it is neccessary to forever ruin the last wilderness in order to extract a year's worth of oil. I can't see how those guys can look at themselves in the mirror. Hell awaits. -- posted 09:54 Monday, a woman riding her bike about ten feet in front of me was sideswiped and knocked onto the curb. Today, I was very nearly taken out by a Taxicab, the driver never saw me. Tomorrow is bike to work day. -- posted 09:10 tuesday, may 15The threads on the Gorgeous Guy @ 4th and Market on CraigsList's Missed Connections are simply some of the greatest blurbs I've ever read. It began with the post above. Others knew who he was right away. Is it a cruel self promoting hoax? Is he married? Unfortunately, nobody knows for sure. And, sadly enough, he may be gone forever. If you need a summary, start here. And be sure to read the story of his hotties.-- posted 15:30 The new Modern Humorist - A Guide to Netiquette is suspiciously similar to GettingIt's Internet for Assholes feature.-- posted 14:29 This seems like a massively bad idea to me. I can't imagine how much one of these stores costs, let alone 25. And a Genius Bar? Give me a break. I think Apple makes the best computers on the market, period. But their business decisions seem absurd to me. Of course, Steve Jobs is big fatcat and I can barely afford cheese.-- posted 13:51
In part of the continuing effort to clean up mid-Market street (see posts from 04/30 and 04/24), the SFPD arrested four members of Food Not Bombs for feeding the homeless. In case you didn't catch that I'm going to type it again, more slowly this time. They were arrested for f-e-e-d-i-n-g the homeless. Happens all the time, it's part of the FNB routine. But still. It bothers me to think that in an area where people are going hungry, those trying to feed them are arrested.-- posted 09:29 Finally, I'm ack, and the site's back up. I forgot to renew my domain before I left, which caused all sorts of problems, not the least of which was that my mom's students were trying to turn in their finals via a honan.net email address. Just before I left, Plastic linked to a story on my site, which resulted in a lot of traffic. Looking at my site statistics there's a major peak following the plastic link and then an immediate drop-off to zero. sunday, may 6It's one a.m., and I'm in Montgomery, Alabama. We spent the day on a farm, and the evening with old family friends. We also met a French family that lives in our old house, and a Swedish family with adopted Colombian children. Tonight we walked home, under the nearly full moon. I'm wearing shorts, which I never get to do in don't-call-it-Frisco. Usually I have nothing but terrible things to say about Alabama, and Montgomery in particular. And although my views haven't realy changed over the weekend, and I still think there are some very fucked up things going on in this state, I was reminded that it can also be a very wonderful place, filled with some very wonderful people. -- posted 23:02 friday, may 4Scientists have confirmed that the first genetically altered humans have been born and are healthy. Not to mention freaks. (found on fark.com)-- posted 19:07 I'm going to be on vacation next week, and I'm planning on avoiding technology as much as possible. I'm sure I won't be able to resist making a post or two, but don't expect regular updates.-- posted 19:01 Wanna get your story on Plastic.com? Here's how.-- posted 12:23 Google listings for my first web page. Some of these are just classic, such as Eric Turner's site, who's been given names like "hardcore" and "mo faded" but likes "Turner." Or Vikki's--who is better known as SloMo--site. Her favorite band is Creed and she seems to have a thing for clip art. Pete likes kitties. Amanda likes illegible text, animated gifs and eminem. God save me.-- posted 09:49 U.S. loses seat on U.N. Human Rights Commission. Well of course we did, our president enjoys killing people. He's killed almost 200 of them, guilty or not.-- posted 08:52 Bush Will Modify Ban on New Roads in Federal Lands. Well of course he will. He hates the earth.-- posted 08:50 The Doonesbury strips between April 16th and April 28th are hillarious, yet incredibly depressing. Why? Because a) Dubya is too scared of the press to actually hold press conferences b) despite the fact that the press only asks him softball questions rather than good ones, like Trudeau poses c) leaving him free to rape the environment and the economy for the benefit of his fat cat supporters while completely screwing over the rest of America and the world and taking us tot he brink of war with another superpower. Wake up America. If your household income is less than $200,000 a year, your president doesn't give a fuck about you. This from a man who lost the popular vote and only won the electoral college due to dirty tricks in the state of Florida and from his father's appointees. This unelected idiot needs to be driven from office before he plunges our nation into war and ruin. thursday, may 3"emptyage" is a homophone (or would it be homonym... I should know that) for my initials m-t-h. It was something I noticed when I was a little kid and always thought it was pretty cool as it was gloomy sounding. But I just searched Google to see if I was in there and came across another emptyage link. Going up a few levels, I found a site with a really cool Flash intro. Drilling down into the meat of the site, I found we shared a lot of the same interests. I'm going to have to check it out further when I get some time.-- posted 16:50 I submitted a link to the Icy Hot Stuntaz to Plastic and as of right now (see time stamp below) it's their top story. I've sent plastic a lot of stories, but this is the first one to hit the front page.-- posted 15:12 Forbes, hardly a lefty media organization, bitchslaps that Dick Cheney pretty hard in this little story, which claims that there is no energy crisis. Which is probably bad news for Cheney's oil company. Dubya's too.-- posted 13:52 I'm quoted in USA Today's Life section on Let Me Stay For a Day.-- posted 09:41 I'm terrified to think that the Icy Hot Stuntaz might not be a joke. In any case, those are really nice cars your parents bought you. I can see how that would make you feel a little rebellious. And Blade, your acne seems to be clearing up, don't despair. By the way guys, you're white. Get over it. Thanks for the tip, Rob.-- posted 08:49 wednesday, may 2Oh my God. Tim just sent me this link. Corey Feldman's Music. Why couldn't he just have had some damn decency and OD'd on heroin in 1988? Is that so much to ask? Huh?-- posted 14:21 Wow, so I think I might be in USA Today's Life section twice tomorrow. Very weird. Once for some quotes I gave a reporter working on a story on letmestayforaday.com, and the other b/c my (3 year old) beanie baby vacation site was chosen as a "hot site of the day" yesterday. -- posted 14:03 I just noticed that yesterday's post didn't go up for some reason. In any case, all it said was that I was super busy from going down to Cupertino for Apple's press conference, then coming back to write one story, and edit two more. And yes, the new iBook is super yummy.-- posted 11:22 So this hit my inbox with what looked like a thousand forwards before it, so it may be old, old news. But in any case it's groovy like Wednesday morning. Chan Marshall (Cat Power) does Slim Shady Karaoke. -- posted 09:41 We went to a May Day Reclaim the Streets rally last night. Great fun, but pretty ineffectual. Although the protest did manage to turn the 4th and Mission intersection into a small-scale rave for at least a few hours, it didn't even get a mention in today's Chronicle. You have to do some serious civil disobedience to get noticed in this town. Maybe if there had been more naked protestors...-- posted 09:33 |
